Wi-Fi marketing 101 – the AWING platform for business partners

October 5, 2020

Main image

Wi-Fi marketing is emerging as an O2O (Offline to Online) trend, a form of advertising that is displayed on the Wi-Fi login screen when customers are at the actual consumption location.

This form is gradually replacing the classic forms of advertising POSM, Standy, ... because simply the user's eyes are focused on the phone screen, so the advertisement is more likely to be seen than other forms. In particular, Wi-Fi marketing will help save a lot of costs when implementing advertising campaigns (campaigns) faster, more economical and more flexible.

AWING WI-FI MARKETING

With conventional Wi-Fi marketing systems, this is a rather complicated system when it is managed by two departments: IT/Network and Advertising Communications (Marcom). Operating it also requires a lot of specialized knowledge. And sometimes, it is quite inconvenient in advertising management, such as advertising programs must be programmed by engineers - the idea is good but when the programming department is in charge, it becomes bad, most of the time it is like that :D. And sometimes campaigns are deployed on the Wi-Fi system, with software that is not good enough, then even arranging how the advertising campaigns run alternately with each other, ... is also a problem.

AWING's ACM Cloud (Adaptive Campaign Management) cloud computing platform is currently the leading and most widely used software in Vietnam. ACM is the solution to the above problems and provides all the necessary features for partners to have full control over the system, detailed authorization and easy management of advertising campaigns.

COOPERATION MODEL

AWING has 3 options for partners who own Wi-Fi systems when converting to the Wi-Fi marketing model, depending on their needs. Specifically:

  1. Advertising Business Priority (QC): shared service for advertising,
  2. Prioritize internal marketing: ACM cloud platform subscription service to self-manage internal campaigns,
  3. Prioritize 1 part of internal QC, the rest is for QC business: a combination of the 2 forms above.

Please contact ACM business department for specific advice.

WI-FI MARKETING ON ACM

A Wi-Fi marketing system consists of the following two main components:

  1. Wi-Fi systems support authentication on the login screen (Captive Portal). Usually, most types of Wi-Fi serving businesses will support the above feature. While types of Wi-Fi used for families (such as TP-Link, Wi-Fi provided by network operators,...) do not have this feature.
  2. Wi-Fi marketing software to display advertising content, while allowing interaction to log in to the Internet.

The ACM integration model to transform Wi-Fi systems into Wi-Fi marketing is illustrated below:

Wi-Fi System

A Wi-Fi system includes AP (Access Point) broadcasting devices, WLC (Wireless Controller) centralized management devices or software, Routers and/or Firewalls.

Wi-Fi equipment vendors are divided into three categories:

  • Type 1 (high-end): Cisco, Extreme/Aerohive, HP Aruba, Ruckus, ...
  • Type 2 (mid-range): Open Mesh, Unifi, Engenius, Cambium, Mikrotik, ...
  • Type 3 (low-end): are OEM devices from unknown companies from China & Taiwan.

The higher the end of the equipment, the higher the number of users, the more stable it is, and the more management tools it has, allowing for more diverse system deployments. Conversely, mid-range and low-end equipment is more suitable for locations with fewer users and lower quality standards.

Case 1 : A large and crowded location (for example Vincom Royal City) requires a high quality system, high-end equipment lines need to be selected to ensure the following requirements:

  • The number of users served by each AP is large enough,
  • The APs will roam smoothly together to form a single network,
  • Ability to avoid mutual interference and interference from other AP devices outside the network,
  • High security, with many features to support anti-network attacks,
  • And many other important features.

Case 2 : A large and crowded location needs a quality system that is sufficient to optimize costs, mid-range devices can be selected. However, it is necessary to invest in additional auxiliary devices to support the ability to serve a large number of people. For example, the Unifi system needs a Microtik device (Wi-Fi gateway) to support.

Case 3 : A chain of crowded locations spread across many different areas, high-end equipment lines also need to be selected:

  • The number of users on each AP is large enough,
  • APs on the same location will roam with each other,
  • Wireless Controller centralized management (over the Internet) enables configuration and monitoring tasks through a single interface,
  • High security, with many features to support anti-network attacks,
  • And many other important features.
Set up Wi-Fi marketing system on ACM

Access ACM cloud at http://acm.awing.vn with the provided account. This platform is developed with the aim of providing partners with the right to master their own management space without requiring specialized knowledge. Next, the administrator only needs a short time to declare the Wi-Fi system connection to ACM cloud, create (logical) locations on ACM, create default advertising campaigns... Basically, the Wi-Fi marketing system has been completed.

SERVICE SETUP

When successfully authenticated by interacting with advertising campaigns, users will be able to use the Internet with a certain amount of time and bandwidth. If they continue to use the service, users need to log in again. Specifically:

1. Time of use

The system needs to set usage time for the following parameters:

  • Access Time: 1-4 hours,
  • Idle Time: 0.5-2h (equal to 50% * Access Time). This is the time when the user's device does not use the Internet, or the phone screen is turned off.
2. Bandwidth
  • Total bandwidth for a location depends on traffic and peak times. In our experience, total bandwidth ranges from 50 – 500Mbps (excluding international bandwidth),
  • User bandwidth is set to around 10-50Mbps (depending on the size of the total bandwidth). Why limit user bandwidth, the reason is to prevent some users from using download software that takes up the entire total bandwidth, affecting other users.

Configuring the above parameters on the Wi-Fi system is not too complicated. AWING will provide partners with the necessary guidelines so that technicians can proactively configure them.

QUALITY CONTROL

The quality of the Wi-Fi system is crucial to the feasibility of the service and is affected by the following system components:

  • Wi-Fi equipment system,
  • Network system (Router, Switch, Firewall (if any), signal transmission cable, ...),
  • Internet connection quality.

Partners need to provide necessary information about their current system, AWING's consulting team will assess whether the infrastructure is capable of providing good enough quality or not? In many cases, partners need to replace (or change) part or all of the existing system (that is, additional costs will arise).

Knowledge and system operation procedures also have a great influence on service quality. Don't worry, partners will be transferred all tools, guidelines and best practices by AWING. This knowledge is extremely valuable and important to help partners have full means to master and operate good services with high stability.

OTHER SERVICES

In case the partner wants to outsource the entire operation of the Wi-Fi marketing system, AWING will provide this service in Q4/2020 with affordable cost and high quality. This service is operated based on another software service developed by AWING, ACM Operation Network (AON), which allows for the automation of detection, alerting and troubleshooting.
